Afro songs, like all songs can be saved and ruined by guest
verses. Today’s piece will be looking at ten afro songs which were saved by the
verses of guest artistes. These songs were either completely saved by their features
or made better.
10. Olamide feat. Omah Lay – Infinity
Back in 2020, Omah Lay was the hottest artist in Nigeria (due to the incredibly speedy success of his project) and he matched that hype everytime he stepped into the studio. “Infinity” is proof of such success; his into verse and chorus was ridiculously catchy and got stuck to the head of any who decided to listen to the song. Olamide was good here but Omah Lay is clearly the focal point.
9. B Red feat. Davido – Fall For You
Fall For You, for those who can remember, was a banger because of the presence of B Red’s cousin Davido. Davido utilized his voice extraordinarily well here bringing energy while maintaining the chill vibe all through his verse. The second Davido comes on, B Red is almost instantly forgotten (all there is to be remembered is the catchy chorus).
8. Wizkid feat. Burna Boy - Ginger
Off the prestigious Made In Lagos album, Ginger is an excellent showcase of two of Nigeria’s best of their time. But in a battle of star factor in this song, Burna Boy steals the spotlight; his verse and outro brought energy and life to the entire song. While Wizkid was focused on the vibe, Burna brought an entirely different but strong and befitting vibe to the song.
7. Blaqbonez feat. Falz – Boombastic
Boombastic is a song which contains a goofy Blaqbonez having fun while rapping; sounds like a Falz style of rap, and Blaqbonez did not hesitate to put Falz on the track. Blaqbonez sounds all over the place just having fun and vibing to the beat but the song does not truly kick off until Falz comes on. Falzs’ vibe is calmer and more mature than Blaqbonez even with the goofy nature of his rap.
6. Reekado Banks feat. Falz – Biggie Man
In 2016, Reekado Banks was having a very enviable reign in the Nigerian music scene. His debut album, Spotlight, was proof of that success and spawned the single "Biggie Man" featuring Falz. Reekado Banks had a good vibe and verse but ultimately Falz stole the show with his interesting and clever wordplay.
5. Sugarboy feat. Kiss Daniel – Kilamity
Kilamity is a single from Sugarboy's debut album, Believe, released in 2017. Sugarboy had a decent verse and vibe, he even tried with the chorus but when Kiss Daniel enters the song the exact incident that occured with B Red repeated itself. The featured artist steals the show entirely.
4. Crayon feat. Rema – Too Correct
Recently, it seems like Mavins Records made it a must for its artists to drop projects. Crayon dropped his Tweleve A.M EP in 2021, and it spawned a single "Too Correct" featuring Rema and it honestly sounded like Rema's idea. From top to bottom, you need to listen closely to sepearte Crayon's voice from Rema's as it sounds almost like Crayons' was autotuned to sound like Rema's.
3. 2Baba feat. Wizkid – Opo
2Baba made released a project in 2020, Warriors, to show that even with the new wave of afro artists in the music scene he is still the boss. The album spawned the single "Opo" featuring Wizkid and it was pure fire. Wizkid on a song with his idol and stealing the show from his idol is nothing short of a dream come true.
2. PsychoYP feat. Blaqbonez – Shots!
“Shots!” is a single from the critically acclaimed “YPSNZ2” album. On this song, Blaqbonez went trap beast mode; completely obliterating the beat with a chill but powerful verse. Blaqbonez’s verse makes PyschoYP’s verse sound weak and bland.
1. Davido feat. Gunna, Dremo & A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie – Big Picture
A Good Time is arguably Davido's best release and "Big Picture" is a an electric track from the album. All the features easily outshone Davido on the song but A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie did something short and incredible before the outro; he went beast mode. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie has shown his prowess on afro tracks previously but this is incredible. His voice was perfectly autotuned to match this track and he did not fail the task given to him.
