10 Afro Songs You Probably Forgot About

Nigeria is the home of African music. A lot of artists have popped up from this country and therefore a lot of songs. Some songs are legendary and instant classics, others are forgotten almost immediately. Today we will be counting down 10 of those songs which blew up at a certain period in time but have now been forgotten.

10. Danny S – Ege

Back in 2018, street hip hop rising at an incredible rate with virtually any artist who drops a song that includes street hip hop could blow; Danny S was one of them. Danny S dropped a single titled “Ege” and most likely did not expect the speed at which his song was going viral. The song was everywhere, featuring on most top ten weekly countdowns, clubs, and radios. As of today barely anyone remembers the name Danny S, let alone Ege.

9. Idowest feat. Slimcase – Shepeteri

As stated earlier, 2018 was a year when almost any street hip hop artist flourished. Idowest was one of those products. He dropped an incredible banger with Slimcase titled “Shepeteri”. The song was so huge it earned a nomination for best street hip hop artist at the 2018 headies and a contract with Davido Music Worldwide. Unfortunately the song faded quickly and people forgot about the song. Idowest, however, only maintains relevance in the music industry because of his being signed to DMW.

8. Maleek Berry – Been Calling

Remember Maleek Berry, that guy that dropped “Been Calling”, “Eko Miami”, and “Let Me Know”; now you remember. Maleek dropped a massive hit in 2018 titled “Been Calling”. The song is a pop song and has a beat similar to that of Wizkid’s “Come Closer”. As of 2021 Maleek Berry has not reached the height he reached in previous years. Although dropping a project in 2020, his name sill does not cause that spark in the minds of Nigerians.

7. Kizz Daniel – Jombo

In 2016 a fast rising Kizz Daniel was dropping hits as if they were bombs, they were all over the place. An example is Jombo. Jombo is a very enjoyable song and had a very funny video to accompany it giving the song extra reason to stick to the mind of listeners. As of today, not many people recall the song as it seemed to escape the mind of many people.

6. Koker – Kolewerk

Many may not remember Koker but “Kolewerk” is a familiar name. The song was released in 2016 and gained a lot of attraction from Nigerians because of its catchy beat and funny lyrics. A remix version was done with popular rapper Olamide, giving the song even more clout. The song got Koker a nomination for the Headies award for best street hip hop artist at the 2016 Headies but after then Koker seemed to vanish from the Nigerian music industry and Kolewerk has long been forgotten.

5. Oritse Femi – Double Wahala

2014 was arguably the biggest year for Oritse Femi, he was at the peak of it all. His song “Double Wahala” blew in ways even he did not expect. The song earned him two nominations at the 2014 Headies; Best Vocal Performance (Male) and Best Street Hop Artist with him winning the latter. Fast forward to 2021 and people can barely recognize the song.

4. Reekado Banks – Problem

Reekado Banks was destined for greatness. In 2014 he won the Headies award for Rookie of the year, the following year he won the award for Next Rated, in 2016 his debut album (Spotlight) debuted at number 10 on the Billboard World Albums chart. From that album he released a single, Problem. Problem was everything but terrible. The beat was good, the vibe was good, even the video was cool but in 2021 you can hardly find anyone who you tell the song’s name to who does not has a shocked face as almost no one can remember the song.

3. Chinko Ekun feat. Falz & Dremo – Shayo

In 2017 Chinko Ekun decided to team up with Falz and Dremo to create a funny yet decent song; “Shayo”. Shayo was very good with Dremo coming with an impressive flow and Falz with his usual “Wazhup” style. It is such a shame that in 2021 people completely forgot about the song.

2. Johnny Drille – Romeo and Juilet

In 2017 Johnny Drille dropped a masterpiece. On paper Romeo and Juilet looks like a song that could last for a long time because it is a break from the usual street hip hop genre, wrong. For some reason alternative music does not last in Nigeria, maybe because they sound like American artists. Romeo and Juilet ended up being forgotten only to be remembered by his fans.

1.     1.  Skiibii feat. Reekado Banks – Sensima

Skibii has been making music as far back as 2016 but then decided to go AWOL. He decided to make a return to the music scene in late 2018 and it surpassed everyone’s expectations. Skiibii and Reekado Banks trade verses with an electric beat that leaves you completely head bopping from beginning to end. The song might not be as forgotten as the others on this list but deserves a spot because it still got lost in the void of Nigerian music.
